ORDERING INFORMATION
FOR THE PRIVATE RELEASE OF OPTIKS
OPTIKS is drawing near completion. I am adding new features as
they are requested and fixing bugs as they are reported and soon
OPTIKS will be of good enough quality to compete side by side
with the other graphics utilities on the market.
In order to meet the demand for a full function OPTIKS without
interfering with the development process I have arranged with
Charlie Innusa at PC Rockland the provide an on-line order
system. You will be asked for your Master Card of VISA number.
It will be validated over night and you will be billed for
access fees. After validation you will be granted access to a
private conference on the BBS. The conference will have the have
recent private version of OPTIKS and the associated arcs. The
huge PC Rockland graphics library will be moved into the
conference for private users only. I will also add about 10 megs
of scanned clip art which will be available nowhere else.
Users will be charged $79.95 for access to the conference. They
will be given the private access phone number to the BBS. Anyone
who does not want to download the latest release of OPTIKS can
add $10 to the $79.95 for shipping and handling, have it charged
to VISA or Master Card, and I will have a distributor mail it
out. Mailing takes longer and there is a chance it will take as
long as 6 weeks.
Once users are registered on the private OPTIKS conference they
can download OPTIKS as often as they like without further
charges. Registered users can have new versions of OPTIKS mailed
at $10 per mailing to cover shipping and handling.
Note: The private version of OPTIKS is not to be distributed to
anyone who has not paid the $79.95 fee. It is a different
version than the public release that is distributed to the
bulletin boards. The clip art on the conference is also for
private use only and is not to be distributed.
Subscribers to OPTIKS can have their subscription transferred to
the BBS conference at no charge, but they will not receive the
(ir)regularly mailed versions if they choose to go this way.
PC Rockland has been upgraded with a 80386 server, and will soon
have additional phone lines. A new, faster network is in the
works. PC Rockland is a PC Board Beta site and has (at last
count) over 11,000 files and programs on line. OPTIKS will not
be the only commercial product available. Full access to the BBS
outside of the OPTIKS conference will require separate
registration with the Sysop.
All of this will happen in the second half of October, as soon
as the grunt work of setting up a conference is finished, the
graphics files are transferred and the 2.04 version of OPTIKS is
arced up. The public access number at PC Rockland is (914)
353-2176, but its a hard BBS to get on. The private lines will
kick you off if you are not registered. Give me a call at my
home phone after October 23, 1987 if you still don't have the
private number. (Remember, if I don't answer by the 4th ring I
am not home and the answering machine will take over. I do not,
never have and never will, return long distance phone calls. The
cost of one call to California from my home is more than the
profit on one sale of OPTIKS.) My home phone (I always regret
this) is: (914) 623-4161. My wife knows nothing about OPTIKS. Do
not ask her questions about OPTIKS. She is an English Major and
a commercial airplane pilot. Computers are things that get in
her way (although they have paid the rent these past 15 years).
I hope this will solve the problem of distributing private
releases of OPTIKS in a timely basis. It should be convenient
for most of you. It will also add value to the product and give
me a way to answer all the questions you have. The conference
message base will be full of complaints and bugs and fixes and
suggestions and ideas. It could easily become the graphics and
desktop publishing "in place". $79.95 is a lot of money, but it
is still $10 less than the closest competitor, and I think
OPTIKS is a good system. When it is finished it should be better
than many products in its class.
